Optimizing Bulk Material Handling with Demag Solutions

Bulk material handling presents a myriad of challenges across diverse industrial sectors, from manufacturing to chemical operations. The efficient handling and precise positioning of dry bulk materials are crucial for seamless processing and packaging. However, the demands of heavy loads and aggressive environments necessitate robust solutions that can ensure safety, accuracy, and reliability. Demag Drive Technology offers tailored components designed to meet the exacting requirements of bulk material handling applications, providing modular solutions that minimize costs and engineering complexities. Discover how Demag’s expertise can optimize your material handling processes and ensure project success.

Handling Bulk Materials

Bulk materials need to be handled in a vast range of applications. In manufacturing environments, the need to combine dry bulk materials together to create a mix. Dry materials may need to be added into hoppers to for processing or packaging. In addition, these materials may be transferred into a tipper for efficient, accurate mixing and combining.

Bulk materials are combined in chemical operations in different ways to create a mix or transfer a finished chemical for packaging or use. Chemical environments can have more extreme requirements than others. Accuracy is critical and materials may create a harsh environment for equipment to operate within. Specialized requirements may be necessary for this and other types of applications.

Challenges of Bulk Material Handling

Bulk materials may be heavy and be awkward to handle. Capacity is a major design consideration on any material handling project. As load capacity increases, the equipment and components handling these materials must be designed to meet these demanding requirements. Awkward loads need to be designed with consideration to where the majority of the load will be placed. If you have a bulk bin where a large, awkward material will be placed, you may need a different wheel and drive component for the side taking on the majority of the weight.

There are many challenges to the equipment and components powering or driving in bulk material handling applications. The solution may be operating in an aggressive or extreme environmental challenges. Dry bulk material handling can create a lot of dust while the environment in a chemical environment may be aggressive and corrosive. The turkey solution and the components used in that solution must be designed to operate in the environment to handle the extremes.

Application Duty and Positioning

Duty is a term we hear a lot in overhead lifting, for instance with overhead cranes, but duty is an indication of the frequency and weight of a load that is handled whether from above with an overhead crane or along the floor with another material handling device. It’s assuring the components chosen and solution design will operate properly safely and effectively with your requirements. In bulk material handling applications, duty can assure your solutions will meet your application requirements.

Positioning in bulk material handling applications may be a critical variable. Assuring a material is transferred efficiently and accurately into a bin or hopper matters.  Precise positioning can mean many things including a start or stop point +/- 3 mm for accurate and safe transfer, lifting, or tipping. The gearbox is what creates the torque necessary for smooth travel and precise positioning. The manufacturer you partner with for the driven components can be your expert consultant to create the requirements for your project.

Demag Drive Technology Solutions

Demag Drive Technology solutions meet the demanding requirements of bulk material handling applications. Whether you require a drive component solution or just a specific component, Demag Drive Technology can deliver. The components are modular, meaning you can tailor the components to your requirements while assuring compatibility and minimizing costs associated with project engineering and assembly time.

Industrial Wheels to Move Your Forward

Unilateral motion is demanded in many high capacity drive technology applications. In these applications, travel or motion is safely handled with this type of wheel. Demag Wheel Block Systems can handle high capacities and demanding environments.

The LRS wheel system can run on rail or the concrete floor. It has the greatest ground clearance of Demag wheel blocks and is the most cost-effective option for applications like transfer cars. Known for its versatility and reliability, the DRS and DRS-M wheel systems offer many different types of wheel options and can meet very fast travel speeds. The DRS-M wheel includes new features not found on the DRS wheels. The infamous RS wheel system excels in high temperature and specialized applications where standard products can’t deliver. Not only can it handle high load capacity, if your spec requires a steel housing, the RS wheel block will meet your requirement.

AC Induction & Gear Motors Driving Your Requirements

If you are looking for an AC induction motor provider who can meet all your specifications, Demag delivers. The Demag motor offering is designed to meet the requirements of nearly any travel speed, torque, and voltage. Whether you need a gear motor or brake motor without the gearbox, Demag can meet your supply requirements.

Demag gear motors are available in right angle, inline, and offset configurations. Whether you need cylindrical rotor with additional brake or conical rotor with integrated mechanical brake, there is a Demag motor to meet your requirements. Many times, our gear motors can be attached to the wheel via direct connection with a splined drive shaft, eliminating the need for chains, sprockets, keyed shafts, and couplings. When creating a drive solution with 2 wheels and a drive shaft, you may be able to drive the application with a single Demag motor, reducing the initial purchase cost, wiring and maintenance of multiple motors.

Our Products in Use

Our customer over in Europe built a concrete plant where the Demag offset gear motor and DRS160 wheel blocks, along with inverters, were used for travel and positioning of the bucket system. The bucket system was used for pickling raw materials and transporting fresh concrete throughout the plant.

With the demands of the bucket system dependent on the use, there were two separate requirements. Buckets were equipped with a central drive powering two wheels or double drive units based on what each was to be used for. With a track gauge of 68 inches (1740mm), each bucket had a total capacity of 8100 pounds (3700 kg). The system was designed with an integrated position measurement system using pulse generators to allow the transported buckets to be automatically and reliably positioned.

The challenges of bulk material handling are demanding on the solutions created. Heavy, awkward loads and aggressive environments put a strain on the solution as a whole and its travel components. Assuring your application meets your requirements is key for a successful project. Demag Drive Technology components are designed to meet nearly any travel requirement and fit seamlessly to create a smooth, accurate travel solution. Used around the world for even the most extreme applications, Demag Drive Technology components are trusted and reliable for bulk material handling applications.
