Something that everyone with lifting equipment will run into one day is the need to order spare parts for repair or maintenance. Whether you are a crane service technician or the maintenance guy in your facility, having the right information to get the right parts the first time is critical. Demag has been manufacturing lifting equipment for more than 200 years. That means you will see a variety of Demag products of various ages in your facility or on service calls. When it comes to hoists, knowing the information you need off the data plate is going to help you get the right spare parts to get the job done the first time.
Like you might expect, the data plate on a Demag hoist gives you a lot of useful information for maintenance, troubleshooting, and replacing hoist units in the future. It gives information like model, year of manufacture, type of hoist, lift speed, reeving, hook path and serial number. Older hoists, like the P-hoist and PK chain hoist, have all the information stamped into the metal data plate, which can make it a little difficult to read over time. Newer model Demag hoists have adhesive data plates. Data plates are normally found on the top of the hoist. Be aware of what data plate you find since Demag motors, KBK rail and other components have plates for identification so an entire hoist unit and crane will likely have a few. Make sure you clarify which one you are looking at.
When you’re performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting a problem, or fixing an issue on a Demag hoist, you will need to have the information contained on the data plate. Always make sure you take down all the information off of the plate, or simply take a photo of it with your phone.
The Entire Model Number
The model number on a Demag data plate is one of the first pieces of information.
The model number tells you a lot about the hoist. The DC chain hoist model number contains the DC model designation, size, load capacity, hook path, reeving, hoist speed, among other details. When you need to order spare parts, having this entire model number is critical. When troubleshooting is necessary, the entire model number gives a technician clues and a path to checking key areas to get the issue resolved.
Year of Manufacture
The year of manufacture can help with troubleshooting an issue on a Demag hoist.
Demag hoists can be in service for a long time! The year of manufacture can give you many clues as you go through the troubleshooting process. Because hoist models may have been produced for many decades, the year of manufacture can tune you onto upgrades or changes to internal parts or features. The same model hoist that was originally built in 1985 may be slightly different than the one built in 1998 simply due to slight technology advances. When it comes to spare parts, the year of manufacture may be necessary for this same reason. For a technician who is trying to diagnose an issue with an old Demag hoist, sometimes the solution is for the customer to replace the hoist. Knowing when the hoist was built will allow you to make an educated recommendation for repairing the existing hoist or replacing it with something newer.
Hoist Serial Number
The serial number is an important piece of information when you need to order spare parts.
All Demag chain hoists and wire rope hoists have a unique serial number. This is true for nearly all Demag components and cranes. A unique serial number comes in handy when there is any reason the factory needs to pull the records for the piece of equipment you are working on. Normally, you would facilitate this through an authorized Demag dealer. When you are in a troubleshooting situation like this, it gives engineering insights on details like electronics configuration, specialized engineering for the project, among other things. Maintenance records should always be kept by the serial number of the component.
When you’re the technician diagnosing the problem or performing the maintenance on a Demag hoist, the information on the data plate is key. It assures you are ordering the right parts the first time and gives you further insight when troubleshooting an issue. Always work with a qualified crane service technician on necessary troubleshooting and repairs to your Demag equipment. Contact an authorized Demag dealer to place your parts order.
